Turning Dreams into Reality

Anne Brady of Anne Brady McQuillans DFK, spoke to us yesterday evening on the topic of “Turning Dreams into A Reality”. Not only did Anne discuss in detail her road to success and how she managed to reach her childhood goals of following in her father’s footsteps and becoming an accountant, she also shared some key pieces of advice from her own life experiences. She recommended that everyone read a book called “Eat that Frog” by Brian Tracey, which highlights 10 different ways to achieve things, and how important it is to tackle the most difficult things first. Anne also highlighted the importance of querying things in everyday life, she discussed “Thinking VS Feeling” and how important it is to ask “Why do we do certain things?”

Anne demonstrated the power of day to day decisions by discussing a changing point in her life. She talked about S & S, which stands for “Support and Supervision” and how important a role it plays in the road to success in the workplace. Anne Brady McQuillans DFK has benefited hugely by simply taking a few minutes each month to discuss 3 important questions with staff. These questions are along the lines of “What went well last month?” “What didn’t go so well?” and finally, “What are our targets for the next month?” She explained to us that something as simple as asking these three questions once a month helps to change bad habits, to encourage staff to come up with suggestions, to get to know yourself, to focus, to take ownership of your own life and also to bring out the best in others. When setting targets or goals, Anne emphasised the importance of always having a time frame for things. She said that your targets must be SMART; Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time Bound.

Some of Anne’s top tips included, “Failure is not an end in itself, take advantage of it” and “The greatest risk is to take no risk at all”. In Anne’s eyes, it is better to achieve 8 out of 10 things than 2 out of 2. Some other useful pieces of advice Anne shared with us was the importance of the English language, and how it is one of the first things she looks for in an interview, a person’s level of English. Another vital skill she looks for in interviews is that of communication. She emphasised the importance of researching the job you are interviewing for and also knowing the sector inside out and their competitors.
